King for a Day

1013149_727201747305482_1230533649_nWe all hear about, “The Greatest Generation” but I wonder if we truly understand what that means.

Yesterday a group of World War II Veterans made the long journey to Washington DC to view the memorial crafted in their honor.

Only to find it was “closed,” and barricaded off because of the federal government shutdown.

But the men who ran across barricades in Europe and Japan wouldn’t be stopped by some barricades made of metal and plastic.

And they got a helping hand as well.

As the veterans walked toward the memorial, Congressman Steve King, spoke with park police on site and aided the veterans’ efforts as they moved the barriers so they could get in.

The story of the veterans moving the barricades as well as Steve King’s support can be read here, here, here or here.

I am personally the son of a disabled Vietnam veteran as well as the grandson of a WWII vet, and I must admit it even brought a tear to my eye when I heard the story.

I couldn’t help but think how my grandfather, a hardworking road builder, would have paid no attention to government shutdowns and silly policies that only hurt veterans as they traveled to visit their memorial.

Alongside a special thank you to Congressman Steve King, I’m truly proud that our veterans who didn’t take “No” for an answer 70 years ago, certainly weren’t going to start now.
