Statement from Governor Culver in Grinnell, Feb. 18

“I have made it a point as Governor to stop efforts to raise taxes, and that is really important, especially during an economic downturn.”

Fact Check

Culver balanced his budget by issuing a 10% across-the-board cut, forcing local communities to fill the hole in education funding. Culver’s cuts to education are the direct cause of property tax increases being considered in communities across Iowa. Media reports show Cedar Rapids and Des Moines property taxpayers could be forced to pay more to compensate for the cuts ordered by Culver.

FACT CHET: a periodic fact check report published to bring clarity to the frequent misstatements, misunderstandings, and outright deceptions coming from Governor Culver and his office.
