RESOLUTION URGING PROTECTION OF SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS FROM INTERNATIONAL TREATIES

WHEREAS, the 2008 Republican Party Platform upholds the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed last year in the Heller case that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms; and

WHEREAS, the Organization of American States is proposing a treaty on firearms trafficking which, if ratified, can be used by gun prohibitionists to attack and restrict lawful gun ownership in the United States; and

WHEREAS, on October 30, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly ordered that work begin on an arms trade treaty that, if approved by the U.S. Senate, would bind Americans with international backdoor gun control; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee stands in proud support of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and will steadfastly oppose all who would dictate how American citizens should be able to exercise their God-given and constitutionally recognized right to effectively defend themselves and their loved ones from attack; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee urges all Members of Congress to oppose any and all efforts to restrict every American’s Second Amendment rights by means of international treaties or compacts.
