Bruce Braley Threatened Legal Action Against Neighbor Over Chickens Stepping Onto His Vacation Property

Bruce Braley Threatened Legal Action Against Neighbor Over Chickens Stepping Onto His Vacation Property
Chickens Were Used As Therapy For Children With Mental Health Issues
DES MOINES – Earlier today, it was revealed that liberal trial lawyer Bruce Braley threatened legal action against his neighbor, because four chickens that are used to help children with mental health and communication issues stepped onto his vacation home property. This is a disturbing pattern for a man who mocked Senator Chuck Grassley because he was a farmer who never attended law school, used chickens to characterize his opponent and lied about being a farmer.

As the Iowa Republican reports:

“Braley’s legal problem started this spring when a chicken crossed his property line. Braley’s wife Carolyn attended a May 8 meeting of the Holiday Lake Owner’s Association to complain about the fowl. The dispute escalated, causing the association to incur nearly $1,700 in legal fees after Braley called the association’s attorney with an implied threat of legal action. … [Attorney Thomas] Lacina wrote that [Pauline] Hampton has four hens, which she uses to ‘work with children who have mental health and communication issues,’ according to Lacina’s e-mail, seemingly based on communication from the board, as Hampton said she did not speak directly with him. ‘They have not been a problem and I use them for therapy and have them certified, as well as they will hopefully be entered into the Iowa State Fair competition this year by my grandson and we WILL be identifying them by where we live and that they are Holiday Lake chickens.’”  (Jeff Patch, “Braley Threatened Litigation Over Chickens At Holiday Lake Vacation Home,” Iowa Republican, 07/14/14)

“Only an arrogant trial lawyer like Bruce Braley would threaten legal action because a few chickens that are used to help children with mental health issues stepped onto the land of his vacation home,” said Iowa Republican Party spokesman Jahan Wilcox.  “Between ridiculing farmers for not having a law degree and bullying his neighbor over a minor chicken dispute, Bruce Braley lacks the temperament to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.”

BACKGROUND …

Braley Threatened Legal Action Against His Vacation Home Neighbor Because A Few Chickens Stepped On His Property.    “Braley’s legal problem started this spring when a chicken crossed his property line. Braley’s wife Carolyn attended a May 8 meeting of the Holiday Lake Owner’s Association to complain about the fowl. The dispute escalated, causing the association to incur nearly $1,700 in legal fees after Braley called the association’s attorney with an implied threat of legal action.” (Jeff Patch, “Braley Threatened Litigation Over Chickens At Holiday Lake Vacation Home,” Iowa Republican, 07/14/14)

Bill Nagle A Member Of The Holiday Lake Owner’s Association Said Braley Escalated The Problem By Threatening Legal Action To Resolve The Dispute.  “It’s stupid that it went this far. Any reasonable person would have talked to their neighbor in a reasonable fashion instead [of threatening legal action],” said Bill Nagle, an association board member. “For being brought up on a farm, he sure has lost his rural, farm values.”  (Jeff Patch, “Braley Threatened Litigation Over Chickens At Holiday Lake Vacation Home,” Iowa Republican, 07/14/14)

Braley’s Wife Complained About The Smell Of The Chickens.  “As to the potential nuisance legal problem, … the only thing mentioned by Ms. Braley is, ‘Saturday evening as I sat on my deck, I could smell the chickens.’”  (Jeff Patch, “Braley Threatened Litigation Over Chickens At Holiday Lake Vacation Home,” Iowa Republican, 07/14/14)

At A South Texas Fundraiser, Braley Mocked Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) As “A Farmer From Iowa Who Never Went To Law School.” BRALEY: “To put this in stark contrast, if you help me win this race you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice, someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for thirty years, in a visible or public way, on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Or, you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Because, if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.” (Rep. Bruce Braley, Remarks At A Trial Lawyer Fundraiser, South Texas, Uploaded 3/25/14)

Bruce Braley Released An Attack Ad That Characterized His Opponent Joni Ernst As A Chick.  Democrat Bruce Braley has created a stir for comparing his GOP rival to a chick. … In the 30-second TV ad, called “Peep,” Braley shows footage of a chick and criticizes Ernst. The ad says she’s campaigning as a budget cutter, but when she “had the chance to do something in Iowa, we didn’t hear a peep. In the state Senate, Ernst never sponsored a bill to cut pork. Never wrote one measure to slash spending.”  Iowa politics watcher Timothy Hagle, a University of Iowa political science professor, tweeted Wednesday: “Imagine if a GOP candidate had used a ‘chick’ in an ad against a female opponent.”  Republican political strategist David Kochel, an Ernst backer, tweeted: “Why aren’t feminists talking about @BruceBraley ad portraying @joniernst as a ‘chick’? If a GOPer did that, they’d be excoriated.”  (Jennifer Jacobs, “‘Chick’ Slam Draw Criticism, The Des Moines Register, 06/05/14)

Recently Trial Lawyer Bruce Braley Lied About His Job And Said He Was A Farmer.  “Democrat Bruce Braley, who was caught on tape in January making a remark that seemed to besmirch Iowa farmers, has been caught on tape seemingly claiming to be one.  ‘We’re farmers,’ a parade attendee appears to tells Braley, a U.S. Senate candidate, during the Fourth of July parade in Iowa Falls last weekend.  ‘So am I,’ Braley answers in a video shared with The Des Moines Register today.  ‘But so is Grassley,’ says the woman, who is seated in a lawn chair on the side of the road.  ‘So am I,’ Braley insists.  Braley is not an active farmer. He doesn’t own farm land and doesn’t earn any farm income, according to his federal financial disclosure reports. He doesn’t perform or manage any farm operations, campaign aides said today.  ”  (Jennifer Jacobs, “Video: Does Braley claim to be a farmer in this parade route exchange?,”  The Des Moines Register, 07/08/14)

Iowa Is Home To Nearly 67 Million Chickens And Over 19 Million Hogs.  “There are 19.2 million hogs (almost 27% of the nation’s hogs), 4 million cattle, 260,000 sheep and 66.9 million chickens in Iowa.”  (A Look At Iowa Agricultural, www.agclassroom.org, Accessed 07/14/14)
