Bruce Braley’s $716 Billion Medicare Cuts Eliminated Jobs At Mercy Medical Center
DES MOINES – Washington liberal Bruce Braley proudly supported ObamaCare, which contained not only $716 billion in Medicare cuts, but also a $5.2 billion cut for hospitals in Iowa. One of the first hospitals adversely affected from these cuts was Mercy Medical Center, which recently eliminated 29 jobs to offset these devastating cuts.
As WHO-TV reports:
Notably, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) says these Medicare cuts will cost each Iowa enrollee $10,074 over the next 10 years.
“As a direct result of Bruce Braley cutting $716 billion from Medicare, Mercy Medical Center had to eliminate 29 jobs,” said Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann. “Braley’s Medicare cuts will cost our hospitals $5.2 billion and will inevitably lead to fewer services for our seniors. Our seniors deserve better than Bruce Braley.”
In March 2010, Braley Voted For ObamaCare. (H.R. 3590, CQ Vote #165: Motion agreed to, thus clearing the bill for the president 219-212: R 0-178; D 219-34, 3/21/10, Braley Voted Yea)
ObamaCare Cuts Medicare By $716 Billion. “First, where it comes from. On July 24, the Congressional Budget Office sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, detailing the budget impact of repealing the Affordable Care Act. If Congress overturned the law, ‘spending for Medicare would increase by an estimated $716 billion over that 2013–2022 period.’” (Sarah Kliff, “Romney’s Right: ObamaCare Cuts Medicare By $716 Billion. Mercy Medical Center Announced 29 Layoffs Due To ObamaCare. REPORTER: “Mercy Medical Center announced today it has laid off 29 people. All of those workers are in Des Moines. Mercy is also modifying manager pay, reducing pay for directorships, reducing hours for certain jobs, and not filling some empty positions. These cuts are a part of the medical center’s effort to cut $38 million. Mercy says the reason for the cuts is due to low payments from Medicare and Medicaid along with changes that are associated with the Affordable Care Act.” MERCEY MEDICAL CENTER PRESIDENT BOB RITZ: “As the federal government and the state payment systems continue to ratchet down on what they pay us, and our costs go up, we have to look for opportunities to create cost efficiencies. And one way you do that is you reduce management costs. And so if we have a department that has you know, a director and a manager and two supervisors for, let’s say 75 staff, we may have removed one of those positions to reduce what we call the layers of management.” (WHO-IA, 5/16/14)
