Congressman Bruce Braley Still Can’t Explain Missed VA Hearings

DES MOINES – In an interview with WHO-TV’s Dave Price this morning, Congressman Braley said he missed over 75% of Veterans’ Affairs committee hearings because “when you’re serving in Congress you often have multiple things going on at the same time.”

THE QUAD CITY TIMES: “Over the past couple days, Republicans have sought to ramp up criticism over Braley’s hearing attendance, seizing on a Sept. 20, 2012, VA committee hearing he missed. It occurred the same day as three campaign fundraisers he attended. “He made time to attend all three of the fundraisers. But he couldn’t make time to show up at the hearing,” Kochel said.” (GOP Hits Braley On VA Panel Attendance, The Quad City Times, 07/23/14)

THE DES MOINES REGISTER: Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley missed 75 percent of meetings for a committee that provides oversight over the Veterans Administration, including one meeting on a day he attended three fundraisers for his 2012 campaign. THE CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE: “In fact, we found Braley missed 78 percent of the full hearings in 2011 and 2012.” (FACT CHECK: Iowa GOP claims Braley missed most of Veterans’ Affairs hearings, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, 07/19/14)

THE SIOUX CITY JOURNAL: “Braley did not say outright that the 75 percent figure was incorrect.” (Nick Hytrek, Braley, Appearing In Sioux City, Defends Record On Veterans Issues, The Sioux City Journal, 09/30/14)
