ICYMI: Cook Report Moves IA-03 to ‘Lean Republican’

Good Friday afternoon,

Earlier today the Cook Political Report moved the IA-03 congressional district from “toss up” to “lean Republican,” demonstrating Congressman David Young’s strong position.

Statement from Charlie Szold, communications director: “Congressman Young is an effective leader for Iowa, working to promote our economy and hold D.C. bureaucrats accountable. Meanwhile Democrats recruited reheated leftover candidates with a history of double-digit losses. It’s no surprise the respected Cook Political Report made this ratings switch.”

IA-03: David Young (R) – Southwest: Des Moines, Council Bluffs
Lean Republican. An unlikely freshman, Young won a convoluted 2014 GOP convention and benefited from a great GOP year in the general election, cruising 53 percent to 42 percent over state Sen. Staci Appel. Democrats see his win as a fluke and hope a presidential cycle will help win this seat back, but their recruitment efforts here have been a soap opera and defeating Young won’t be easy.

Democratic Iraq veteran Jim Mowrer, who took 38 percent in the 4th CD in 2014, is running here this time, and some Democrats argue his combat experience will contrast nicely with Young’s Capitol Hill career. Each day Mowrer consolidates support, the less likely it is that Democrats’ very top choice, U.S. Attorney Nick Klinefeldt, gets in. Former Gov. Chet Culver was rumored to be interested but now looks unlikely to run.
