RPI Statement on Misleading Associated Press Story on Secretary of State Paul Pate
Des Moines, IA – Republican Party of Iowa Communications Director Jesse Dougherty released the following statement regarding the misleading story published by the Associated Press on Secretary of State Paul Pate:
“The recent Associated Press story published on Secretary of State Paul Pate was totally unsupported by the facts. As a standard, we expect members of the media to fact check their stories before publishing, but Ryan Foley and the Associated Press neglected to wait for either an opinion from the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board or a statement from the Secretary of State’s office.
“We’re disappointed that Mr. Foley and the Associated Press chose to rush ahead and file this misleading and inaccurate “scoop,” instead of waiting to see if they had the facts on their side. If Mr. Foley would like to editorialize instead of report the facts, we hear the Des Moines Register is hiring political opinion writers. Both the Executive Director and Chairman of the Disclosure Board have stated that Secretary Pate fully complied with the requirements, showing he was in the right. Ryan Foley and the Associated Press should immediately retract or correct this false story.”
